Lab 1.0 occurred as a conceptual prototype to set up the process and experiment with various methods of training and orientation. We used various applied theatre techniques to onboard our first cohort of community animators and solidify the initial story sharing circle process.

Through the activities of laboratory 1.0, we began building a coherent ethic around this type of story-sharing work because it centres lived experience as the well-spring for creation. We are also building a trauma-informed praxis intent upon seeking healing and transformation within community through validation of impact. Tensions can exist between the desire for brave, finished, and polished productions with the creation of nurturing supportive spaces that allow for learning and growth. We prefer to focus on the latter. These spaces facilitate an inductive journey of discovery that builds individual, group, and system insight. This can and is done joyfully while we focus on difficult scenarios.

This workshop helped participants practice theatre outside of traditional theatre spaces and transform any space into a defined aesthetic location. We found it intriguing to use Inter Arts Matrix’ Hole In The Ground installation to spark ideas for this workshop and will continue to find creative workshop locations to use in the future.

For Dis placed, one of our participants, Mauleek, openly shared his story with the group. In this workshop, the group took in his story and practiced sculpting their bodies to build pictures based on their story. Mauleek’s story and these pictures were transformed into the Canadian Dream later, showcasing our practice of rapid and organic dramaturgy. See images of Dis placed below!
